114th birth anniversary of Diosdado Macapagal

LUBAO, PAMPANGA ─ The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) together with the Municipal Government of Lubao, will spearhead the simple commemorative rites at the Museo at Aklatan ni Diosdado Macapagal on 28 September 2024, 8:00 a.m.

Mayor Esmeralda Pineda will spearhead the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites. She will be joined by NHCP Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo, Pampanga Governor Dennis G. Pineda, Vice Governor Lilia G. Pineda, and Diosdado Macapagal descendant, Ms. Cielo M. Salgado.

Diosdado Pangan Macapagal was the 9 th President of the Republic of the Philippines, and his likeness can be seen on the 200-peso bill issued by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. He is remembered to have introduced the first land reform law, placed the peso on the free currency exchange market, and he liberalized foreign exchange and import controls. He was also responsible for shifting the country’s observance of Independence Day from July 4 to June 12, commemorating the day President E. Aguinaldo declared the independence of the First Philippine Republic in Kawit, Cavite.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
