MANILA, Philippines – After more than a decade in the making, the proposed “Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act,” also known as the PhilATOM Bill, is now just one signature away from becoming law.
Originally filed in the 14th Congress and revived as House Bill No. 9293 in the 19th Congress, the measure seeks to establish the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (PhilATOM)—a key step in the country’s push for nuclear energy safety and governance.
The bill recently passed on third and final reading in both chambers, with strong support from Senator Alan Peter Cayetano helping secure its Senate version. It now awaits the signature of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“This is a huge achievement not only for me but for every citizen of our country and the next generation,” said Congressman Mark Cojuangco one of the principal authors of the bill, highlighting the long-standing vision to develop a safe, regulated nuclear energy framework in the Philippines.
If signed into law, the measure will pave the way for independent regulation of atomic energy and reinforce the country’s efforts toward energy security and sustainability.
