BAGAC, Bataan — Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, a sprawling property from over 400 hectares in the midst of this first-class province, lit up the Christmas season with an environmental competition held last Saturday.
The organizer of this event skips the usual artificial Christmas tree and launches “Christmas Tree-Cycle Competition,” a special cause that aims to promote environmental conservation in the entire province of Bataan.
Launched on October 15, the said craftsmanship competition encourages the local folks to unleash their creativity, camaraderie, and leadership while saving Mother Earth.
The Philippines is one of the major sources of ocean pollution. Next to China and Indonesia, the Philippines placed third on the list of countries with most ocean plastic pollution, according to a 2015 study conducted by the University of Georgia and reported by Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment.
Each of the participating municipalities and cities came up with a 20-feet Christmas tree made solely from recyclable materials. Contestants were advised to ensure that their trees and ornaments are weather-proof.
These trees were presently on display within the vicinity of Las Casas since December 7 for the grand reveal and heritage resort’s official lighting ceremony.
Remaining finalists will have a final showdown in a Christmas concert titled “A Christmas Carole” on December 15, the first day of the traditional “Simbang Gabi” at Sanctuario de San Jose.
The Project also aims to promote camaraderie, conservation of the environment, arts and the rich cultural tradition of Christmas in the Philippines.
This event was also supported by different Bataan LGUs. Bataan Mayors Gila Garcia of Dinalupihan, Aida Macalinao of Samal, Limay Vice Mayor Richie David, Bataan SK Fed President Board Member Precious Manuel and Bataan Tourism Chief, Alice Pizarro, their staff and other officials were also present during the colorful night.
The entry from Abucay town was declared as the grand winner.
