Group exhibition hosted by Galerie Raphael opens June 22 – July 7, 2021

Identity is the way one perceives and expresses the “self”. Factors and conditions that an  individual is born with—such as heritage, cultural background, and gender —often play a role in  defining one’s identity. However, many aspects of a visual artist’s identity change throughout his  or her life. Their experiences can alter how they see themselves or are perceived by others.  Conversely, their identities also influence their individual and definitive art practice.

The artworks contain sets of themes and concepts that the artists use to help them build their imagery; such as the many parts that make up one’s individualized self, or the concept of the  internal and external psyche. It is a fusion of different styles, mediums, surfaces and techniques.  Somewhere along the exhibit’s conception, the artists managed to locate and establish a sense  of harmony amongst all of the variating elements.

The participating artists probe the dualities of strength and fragility, hope and despair, joy and  grief – using their own artistic expression as a channel. The works for “Intersecting Identities” aims to demonstrate the enduring strength of art as a metaphor for crossroads of converging  views. The exhibit is an amalgamation of learnings, as well as individual explorations of the social  formula of what creates an identity.
