Bulacan steps up fight vs HFMD outbreak

MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan – The provincial government of Bulacan has intensified its campaign against Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) with 24/7 surveillance following a surge in cases across the province.

Through the Provincial Health Office (PHO), authorities have launched measures to control the spread of the viral infection and safeguard public health. These include round-the-clock monitoring in all 24 cities and municipalities, coordination with sanitary inspectors, continuous case tracking, specimen transport for lab confirmation, and public awareness campaigns.

The PHO has reminded residents that while there is no specific cure for HFMD, symptoms can be managed with hydration, soft foods, and over-the-counter medications for fever and body pain.

From January 1 to 25, Bulacan recorded 252 suspected HFMD cases—a staggering 460% increase from the 45 cases logged in the same period last year, according to the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit.

San Jose del Monte led with 37 cases, followed by Marilao (35) and Santa Maria (22). Most cases involved children aged four and below, including eight-month-old infants.

Governor Daniel Fernando urged parents to be extra cautious and vowed to continue efforts to protect public health, saying, “We will find ways to ensure the safety of every Bulakenyo.”
