Lapid, Pineda lead P420-M new Porac municipal hall

PORAC, Pampanga – Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid and Vice Governor Lilia ‘Nanay’Pineda led the inauguration of the new P420-million Porac municipal hall in Barangay Cangatba on Monday, February 5. The newly constructed government center, spanning three hectares, marks a major infrastructure investment for the town.

Acting Mayor Myla B. Clarete expressed gratitude to Lapid for securing funding for the municipal hall, which was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The new facility replaces the old town hall in Barangay Poblacion and will officially become operational on February 6, following Municipal Ordinance No. 01, Series of 2025.

DPWH District Engineer Bryan Frias confirmed that the total project cost reached P420 million, higher than the previously announced P370 million. The design of the building was inspired by the US Library of Congress, with plans for additional government offices within the complex. The new Porac Police Station was also inaugurated is also part of the municipal center.

Lapid, a native of Porac, said the project is part of his efforts to bring infrastructure development to his hometown. He is seeking a fourth term in the Senate in the May 12 elections and has vowed to continue supporting projects that benefit Pampanga.

The inauguration also highlighted the political reunion of the Lapid and Pineda families after years of rivalry. Lapid’s son, former Governor Mark Lapid, ran against Vice Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda in the 2007 elections. Now, the two political groups have joined forces under the Kambilan party.

Former Councilor Michael “Mike” Tapang, the Pineda-backed mayoral candidate in Porac, said the unity of political leaders is crucial in restoring the town’s reputation after it was linked to a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) scandal. He vowed to prioritize economic growth and job creation if elected.

“Ang matagal po naming pangarap na tunay na pagkakaisa para sa Porac, ngayon po ay natupad na,” Tapang said. “Kami po ay nagkakaisa upang sagipin ang aming bayan at ibalik ang dignidad ng aming mga kababayan.”

Tapang’s lineup includes Vincent Lusung for vice mayor and councilor candidates Atty. Tet Buan, Bong Buan, Rito Buan, Max Bungque, Dexter David, Papa Duds David, Alfer Nacu, and Maynard Lapid. Maynard is the youngest son of Lapid, while Dexter David is the son of the late Mayor Roy David.

Lapid, a three-term former governor of Pampanga, has authored several laws, including the Free Legal Assistance Act of 2010. He has pledged to expand the law if re-elected, aiming to provide free legal aid to more Filipinos.

The new municipal hall is expected to improve government services and accommodate Porac’s growing population. Officials said the project is part of a broader effort to transform the town into a key economic hub in Pampanga.
