Calumpit unveils modern public market upgrade

CALUMPIT, Bulacan – The local government of Calumpit has officially opened the newly upgraded Mercado de Calumpit, a ₱399-million public market redevelopment project funded with assistance from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).

Designed to be more than just a marketplace, the Mercado de Calumpit aims to attract both local and international tourists with its signature products, including ulang (freshwater prawns), longganisa, and other specialty goods that have put Calumpit on the culinary map. At the entrance, a statue of ulang stands as a tribute to the town’s rich fishing heritage, particularly along the Angat River.

The new facility features a spacious, clean, and well-organized structure, reflecting the town’s vision of modernizing local commerce while preserving its cultural identity. It also includes an improved tricycle terminal, enhancing accessibility for both vendors and customers.

With this transformation, the Calumpit municipal government envisions the Mercado de Calumpit not only as a hub for trade but also as a destination for gastronomic tourism, aligning with the country’s Bagong Pilipinas initiative for economic and infrastructure development.
