Angeles City opens first solar-powered school

ANGELES CITY, Pampanga—The Angeles City Government, led by Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr., has inaugurated the first solar-powered public school in Central Luzon, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy use in education.

Located in Belen Homesite Elementary School, Barangay Sto. Cristo, the facility operates with 54 solar panels, generating 32 kilowatts of power to sustain seven fully air-conditioned classrooms equipped with two-horsepower air conditioning units and television sets.

“The first solar-powered public school in the region is in Angeles City. This proves that clean energy programs are achievable—we can protect the environment while reducing dependence on costly electricity from fossil fuels,” Lazatin said.

The city invested ₱3 million in classroom renovations, including new paint, tiles, and fixtures. Lazatin also revealed plans to install solar panels in all public schools, 33 barangays, and six Rural Health Units, aiming to save the city ₱100 million annually on electricity costs.

“We have to tap renewable energy that is most cost-effective and cost-efficient,” Lazatin added.
