Once in a while we change our minds. Not only on trivial matters. Even on important ones. Even a president has the privilege of changing his mind. Even if he is President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, a highly principled man.
Earlier, he proposed for a constitutional convention that will serve as the launching pad for federalism. The other day he said the revision of our basic charter will be undertaken through constituent assembly (con-ass). Ano ba talaga kuya?
Some observers noted that last month House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez declared that a Con-Ass is self-serving. He is also now singing a different tune. He is saying a Constitutional Convention is long and expensive. Ano ba talaga mga kuyang?
I am not the only one who will tell you the fact we have so many nincompoops in both houses of congress, and many countrymen are fearful it will forever keep the political dynasties along with their vested interests if we allow the present ‘honorable’ men and women of congress to do the amendments. It is so disappointing.
Long and expensive? Is there not a saying that haste makes waste? And how many times have we heard that preserving what the people represents is expensive? Sometimes it will cost the lives of men and women. If our present leaders will not behave with the highest democratic ideals for our people, we should not proceed with the con-ass. Let not the voice of many discredited men and women who populate both houses, and many who reportedly ‘bought’ their seats and a few others depended on their popularity with not much gray matter between their lobes, make the revision. The patriotic people don’t have sticky fingers and robbed the people’s taxes. You can start making a headcount of whom you believe are patriots in those houses.
Our popular president will receive a resounding applause if there will be an admission of error. Anyway this tough and honest president is always acknowledging errors, when he feels there is a miscalculation on his current stand.
