BALANGA CITY – Showcasing its dedication to environmental stewardship, the City of Balanga in Bataan became the first in the Philippines to receive Wetland City Accreditation from the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

This recognition places Balanga among 31 newly accredited cities worldwide that have demonstrated a strong commitment to wetland conservation and sustainable urban development.

City Environment and Natural Resources Office Head Nerissa Mateo highlighted Balanga’s commitment to wetland conservation through its Wetland and Nature Park.

The park serves as a sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds and functions as a natural outdoor museum showcasing a well-diversified bio-network.

“The Ramsar Standing Committee announced Balanga as one of the newly accredited cities worldwide during its 64th meeting. The city received this recognition because of its efforts and initiatives in environmental protection and conservation, particularly in wetland preservation,” she said.

Mateo also emphasized that the recognition proves development and environmental protection can go hand in hand.

“This distinction not only brings international recognition to the city but also encourages others in the Philippines to adopt similar approaches to urban wetland management. It will also encourage our residents to continue protecting the environment while pursuing progress,” she added.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, formally known as the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, is an international treaty that promotes the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

It recognizes the ecological, economic, and cultural significance of wetlands worldwide.

By securing this accreditation, Balanga has set a national precedent, underscoring the crucial role of wetlands in urban settings and paving the way for other cities to achieve a balance between nature and progress. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Bataan)
