BALANGA CITY – About 30 exhibitors, who benefit from various extension programs and projects of the Bataan Peninsula State University – Extension and Training Services Office (BPSU-ETSO), showcased their products at the 3rd ETSOPreneur Trade Fair at the BPSU Main Campus in Balanga City.
With the theme “Empowering Communities: Showcasing Innovations and Products of BPSU Extension and Training,” the two-day trade fair highlighted services and products developed through training programs, emphasizing their role in fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth within the community.
BPSU President Ruby Santos-Matibag aims to expand the university’s extension activities to reach more communities and gain wider recognition.
She envisions these initiatives creating a greater impact on beneficiaries.
ETSO Director Bernadeth Gabor, who conceptualized the annual event, emphasized the importance of organizing programs that connect academia with industry and promote community empowerment.
“By bridging the gap between education and real-world application, we equip individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive,” she said.
One of the exhibitors, the Bataan District Jail (BDJ) male and female dormitory, sold handcrafted bags, wallets, bracelets, necklaces, handmade coconut shell coin banks, and other products created by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
BDJ Female Dormitory Development Officer, Jail Officer I Merry Joy Terrible, noted that selling these products allows PDLs to earn income while in prison, helping them support their daily needs and provide for their families despite their incarceration.
“While our PDLs are in jail, we train them in various skills through the assistance of BPSU-ETSO, TESDA, and other partner agencies. This equips them with valuable skills and knowledge, making their time more productive. Even in prison, they can earn money through this initiative,” she highlighted.
The trade fair also featured a variety of products, including agricultural goods, tissue paper paintings created by persons with disabilities, rags, potholders, and a range of food products. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Bataan)
