BALANGA CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has inaugurated Central Luzon’s first legislated Multi-Species Marine Hatchery at Barangay Quinawan in Bagac, Bataan.
The P32-million facility aims to boost fish seed production, support aquaculture enterprises, and enhance marine resource sustainability in the province and its neighboring areas.
Republic Act 11912 mandated the hatchery’s establishment to provide critical support for the aquaculture sector.
Fully powered by solar energy, it operates efficiently and sustainably while minimizing environmental impact.
BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz underscored the hatchery’s importance in ensuring a stable supply of high-quality fingerlings for fisherfolk and hatchery operators.
BFAR Assistant Director for Technical Services Isidro Velayo Jr., representing Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and BFAR National Director Elizer Salilig, highlighted in his speech how the project aligns with the country’s food security initiatives.
Following the inauguration, BFAR Central Luzon will oversee operations for two years in collaboration with the Provincial and Municipal Agriculture Offices.
During this period, the agency will conduct intensive training for local personnel and gradually implement a transition plan for a smooth handover.
After two years, the provincial government of Bataan will assume management through a Memorandum of Agreement.
Once fully operational, the hatchery will serve as a key hub for fish seed production, broodstock maintenance, and training programs for fisheries stakeholders, government personnel, and state universities and colleges. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Bataan)
