IBA, Zambales – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), through its National Shellfish Development Program, led the ceremonial harvest of the Paluig-Masinloc Mussel Association’s first-ever mussel production at Barangay San Lorenzo in Masinloc, Zambales.
The event highlighted the success of the techno-demo project on mussel culture, which utilized the seven meter by five meter bamboo raft method.
BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz said the project’s success could inspire other coastal communities to adopt sustainable farming practices, boosting local economies and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the aquaculture sector.
During the harvest, the members collected 905 kilograms of mussels, marking a significant milestone for the association.
Through the initiative, BFAR Central Luzon provided training and support, equipping members with modern mussel culture techniques to enhance their farming practices.
As the association expands its mussel farming operations, it aims to strengthen its role in the local aquaculture industry.
The bureau also plans to promote the bamboo raft method in other areas to improve productivity and enhance the livelihood of fisherfolk.
With this first harvest, the association takes a promising step forward in sustainable aquaculture, reinforcing BFAR’s commitment to supporting local communities through innovation and responsible farming practices. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Zambales)
