BIR destroys ₱2.1B worth of illicit cigarettes

Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr. has ordered the nationwide destruction of ₱2.1 billion worth of illicit cigarettes as part of the agency’s intensified campaign against illegal trade. From February 24 to 28, 2025, simultaneous destruction operations will take place in 12 designated locations across the country, with Porac, Pampanga serving as the main destruction hub. The operation aims to curb tax losses, protect legitimate businesses, and safeguard public health from unregulated and potentially harmful products.

Commissioner Lumagui emphasized that this initiative is more than just about destroying illegal goods—it is a firm statement of the BIR’s commitment to law enforcement. Alongside the destruction, the agency continues to file criminal cases against individuals and companies involved in illicit trade. Under his leadership, the BIR is strengthening its enforcement strategies through advanced technology and intelligence-driven operations to ensure fair and efficient tax collection.
