BOC seizes P28.7-M misdeclared sugar in Subic

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—The Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted fourteen 20-foot container vans loaded with misdeclared sugar products from Vietnam, with an estimated value of PhP28.7 million, during an inspection led by BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio on April 10, 2025.

The shipment was seized at the Port of Subic for violating customs regulations and other relevant laws, including possible misdeclaration and improper import documentation.

According to Commissioner Rubio, the containers were declared to contain different commodities but were found to be filled with refined sugar upon physical inspection.

“This seizure is part of our intensified efforts to curb smuggling and ensure the proper collection of duties and taxes,” Rubio said, adding that the BOC remains committed to protecting local industries and upholding lawful trade practices.

The agency is preparing appropriate legal action against the consignees and brokers involved, while the seized goods will undergo proper inventory and disposition in accordance with customs procedures.

The BOC emphasized its ongoing campaign against agricultural smuggling, citing its economic impact on local producers and the broader supply chain.
