Bruce McTavish, legendary boxing referee, dies at 85

Bruce McTavish, a world-renowned boxing referee and humanitarian, passed away on July 16, 2025. He was 84. Originally from New Zealand, McTavish made the Philippines his home since 1967, officiating over 150 title fights—including those of Manny Pacquiao—and earning multiple WBC Referee of the Year awards. A tireless advocate for children and public health, he led initiatives like the Polio Plus Project and Bahay Bata Foundation in Angeles City. Naturalized as a Filipino in 2018, he embodied compassion and civic duty. His wake is at Divine Mercy Chapel, Carmenville; funeral Mass on July 20, 7:30 a.m., followed by interment.
