Central Luzon media group mourns, condemns killing of journalist Johnny Dayang

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Central Luzon Media Association (CLMA) on Tuesaday, April 29, condemned in the strongest terms the killing of veteran journalist Johnny Dayang, who was shot dead inside his home in Aklan while watching television.

CLMA Regional President Deng Pangilinan called the incident “a brazen and cowardly attack on a pillar of Philippine journalism,” and demanded swift justice for Dayang’s death.

“We are deeply outraged by the cold-blooded murder of Johnny Dayang—a respected journalist, a fearless truth-teller, and a voice for the voiceless,” Pangilinan said in a statement.

Dayang, who had dedicated decades of his life to journalism and media development in the regions, was reportedly killed by unidentified assailants who entered his home and shot him while he was watching television. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

“No one deserves to die for speaking the truth. Johnny’s assassination is a grim reminder of the continuing dangers journalists face in the country, even within the supposed safety of their own homes,” Pangilinan said.

He added that the CLMA stands in solidarity with Dayang’s family, colleagues, and the press community in mourning his loss, and called on both local and national authorities to ensure that justice is served without delay.

“The culture of impunity must end. Each unresolved killing emboldens the enemies of press freedom. We urge the government to act decisively—not just with words, but with action,” Pangilinan said.

Dayang was known for his work as a columnist, publisher, and media leader who championed press rights and provincial journalism. He was also a former president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI).

Media groups across the country have joined the call for accountability and greater protection for journalists, particularly in the provinces where risks remain high.
