CKS CELEBRATES NATIONAL ARTS MONTH WITH ‘PAPAPEL’ EXHIBIT, LINGUISTIC BOOK LAUNCH

ANGELES CITY — In a dual celebration of heritage and artistry, the Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) hosted the formal opening of the “Papapel” papercutting exhibit and the launch of a landmark linguistic dictionary at the Mamerto G. Nepomuceno Building on February 20.

The event, held in observance of National Arts Month, featured the works of Holy Angel University (HAU) alumnus Oscar “Papa Osmubal” Balajadia. The exhibit, titled “Papapel,” showcases Balajadia’s mastery of traditional papercutting techniques integrated with contemporary themes.

Coinciding with the gallery opening was the debut of Balajadia’s latest scholarly work, Dictionary of Capampangan Words with Chinese Roots and Related Austronesian, Sanskrit, and Spanish Etymologies plus Chinese Loanwords in Filipino.

The publication offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of the Kapampangan language and its diverse cultural influences.

University President Leopoldo Jaime Valdes led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was joined by several prominent figures in Philippine heritage and linguistics, including:

Teresita Ang See, Founder of Bahay Tsinoy; Dr. Reggie Cruz, Commissioner for the Kapampangan Language (KWF);

Dr. Benjamin Bendillo Jr., Commissioner for the Ilokano Language (KWF).

The program also highlighted the historical ties between the Kapampangan and Chinese communities through cultural performances. Chinese students from the Angeles Liplin School provided traditional dance and song numbers to mark the occasion.

The exhibit is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to promote local history and the arts.
