VATICAN CITY — The coffin of Pope Francis was solemnly sealed on the evening of April 25 at St. Peter’s Basilica, marking the end of the public viewing period as the faithful prepare for his funeral on April 26.

The Rite of the Closing of the Coffin of the Roman Pontiff was presided over by Papal Master of Ceremonies Archbishop Diego Ravelli, together with Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.

More than 100,000 mourners had gathered throughout the day to pay their final respects to the beloved pontiff, whose leadership and message of mercy resonated around the world.

The ceremony was conducted with deep reverence, in keeping with the long-standing traditions of the Church, as prayers were offered for the eternal repose of the Holy Father.

Pope Francis’ funeral Mass will be held tomorrow, April 26, in St. Peter’s Square, where thousands more are expected to gather in mourning and thanksgiving for his life and ministry.
