The recent collapse of the P91-million flood control structure in Barangay Candating, Arayat, Pampanga, highlights potential defects in its construction. Former Arayat Vice Mayor Sixto Mallari has urged a thorough investigation to uncover possible faults, suggesting that cutting or inadequate construction may be to blame.
Engineering experts assert that longer sheet piles could have better withstood the Pampanga River’s pressure, but the current steel barrier failed, affecting ten nearby homes.
Mallari criticized the handling of the project, noting that it was managed at the national level rather than locally, which might have led to oversight issues. He also emphasized the need for rechanneling the Pampanga River to prevent future incidents, an initiative hindered by budget constraints in the past.
Compounding the problem, structural defects have also emerged in the Arnedo Dike, causing safety concerns in Barangay Cupang and Barangay Guemasan. This has led to a temporary closure of the dike to protect residents.
The situation underscores the urgent need for rigorous inspection and maintenance of flood control structures to ensure they meet safety standards and effectively safeguard communities.
