TARLAC CITY — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Luzon Cluster 2 recently launched its free WiFi Internet Access in Public Places project dubbed as “Pipol Konek” in Tarlac City and Pura town.
“Pipol Konek is a fulfillment of one of President Rodrigo Duterte’s promises during his first State of the Nation Address last year where he stated that WiFi access must be provided to the public at no charge,” DICT Luzon Cluster 2 Field Operations Office Director Cheryl Ortega said.
It aims to close the “Digital Divide” and build an inclusive and thriving ICT environment focused on developing the countryside, through delivering free broadband internet access to different municipalities and cities across the country.
Three internet access points were installed in the different public sites in Tarlac City namely the City Plazuela, Business Permits and Licensing Office, and Tarlac Provincial Capitol Lobby.
Moreover, four places in Pura were given free internet access: the Municipal Hall, Pura Plaza, Rural Health Unit, and Library Hall.
“Coinciding with this launch, Internet Media Information Literacy Training in the said areas was held where participants were taught the basic steps on how to connect to the free WiFi and were provided information on different government e-services,” Ortega added. –Carlo Lorenzo J. Datu
