DOH cautions public vs mystery disease from China

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon warns the public to be more cautious following reports of a mystery disease that affected 44 individuals in China.

In a media conference, DOH Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) Head Jessie Fantone said not much is known about the mystery disease except that it comes from China and that it causes respiratory infection.

“Since it remains a mystery disease, there is no vaccine or any treatment for this yet. We cannot direct our treatment yet unless we know what we are facing,” Fantone said.

However, the RESU chief assured the public that they are closely monitoring the disease and will provide updates from time to time. He also assured that the World Health Organization is working 24/7 to identify the virus.

With this, DOH urged the public to embrace healthy lifestyle, practice proper hand hygiene and observe cough etiquette to prevent transmission of respiratory infections.

“Since this mystery disease causes respiratory infection, we also advise the public to stay away from crowded places to prevent possible transmission of any respiratory disease,” Fantone said.

In addition, DOH also directed the Bureau of Quarantine to closely monitor all airports and seaports, and intensify the checking of all incoming travelers especially those manifesting fever or signs of respiratory infection.

“Those travelers coming from China and manifesting flu-like symptoms are advised to immediately seek medical attention and share their travel history with the authorities,” Fantone furthered.
