Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) completed a 1,460-linear meter flood control structure along the barangay Ligaya Section of Pampanga River in Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija.
The four-layered gabion-type flood wall is expected to serve as the first line of defense against potential river overflow due to heavy rainfall.
DPWH Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad said residents living in low-lying communities can now look forward to enhanced safety.
“This initiative will protect them from flooding threats, especially during natural disasters,” he pressed.
Meanwhile, resident Pableto Tolentino said the completed flood mitigation structure could significantly reduce damage to their farmland and minimize crop and livestock losses, particularly during monsoon seasons.
“Noong Bagyong Ulysses, ‘yun, malakas ‘yun. Siyempre, malakas ang tubig, hindi natin mapigil – inaanod ang mga bahay d’yan sa baba. Maganda ‘yang proyektong ‘yan at nang hindi na pupunta ang tubig d’yan sa kabukiran,” he shared.
The P77.1-million project was part of the agency’s flood management program funded under the 2023 national budget. (CLJD-PIA 3)
