Escudero pushes total ban on local online gambling

MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Chiz Escudero on Monday called for a complete ban on local online gambling, citing its harmful effects on society and the economy. Escudero said unregulated digital betting platforms have led to rising crime rates, financial ruin for many Filipinos, and the exploitation of workers in the industry.

“The government cannot turn a blind eye to the growing social costs of online gambling. It has become a breeding ground for illegal activities, from fraud to human trafficking,” Escudero said in a statement. He urged law enforcement agencies to intensify their crackdown on illicit operators and called on Congress to pass stricter legislation.

Escudero’s proposal comes amid increasing scrutiny of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), which have been linked to various crimes, including money laundering. While the government has imposed stricter regulations, the Senate President argued that a full prohibition is the only effective solution to curb its negative impact.

The call for a ban has gained mixed reactions, with some industry stakeholders warning of job losses and economic repercussions. However, Escudero emphasized that the long-term benefits of protecting Filipinos from gambling-related harm outweigh the short-term gains. “We must prioritize public welfare over profit,” he said.
