Catholicism was introduced to the Philippines in 1521 by Ferdinand Magellan, marking the beginning of Christianity in the archipelago. The Spanish colonization played a pivotal role in spreading Catholicism, using the Church as a tool for conversion and governance. Today, Catholicism is not only a religion but an integral part of Filipino identity, influencing culture, politics, and society.

For the Jubilee Year 2025, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has designated 500 churches across the country as pilgrimage sites, offering opportunities for spiritual renewal, reflection, and conversion. This initiative aligns with Pope Francis’s call for pilgrimages during this holy year, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and indulgences. The CBCP’s efforts underscore the significance of these sacred sites in fostering a deeper connection with faith and community.
