STA. ANA, Pampanga – Farms and homes in the neighboring barangays of San Agustin, San Roque, and San Pablo were placed at risk on Monday after Matubig Creek overflowed, Mayor Dinan Labung reported.

According to Labung, the creek was blocked by trash and debris after a steel barrier at the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) check gate was left uncleared. Nearly 30 truckloads of garbage clogged the creek, forcing water to find an exit that eventually damaged a slope.

“This flooding could have been prevented if waste was disposed of properly. We will continue to suffer if we lack discipline,” the mayor stressed.

Labung said his office has started repairing the damaged slope, with the provincial government also helping in clearing operations.

Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, who immediately dispatched assistance to Sta. Ana, reminded residents to take part in flood prevention efforts. “The provincial government is here to support, but discipline in waste disposal must come from the community. We must work together to keep our rivers and creeks clear,” she said.

Both officials appealed to residents to stop dumping garbage in waterways to avoid repeat incidents.
