Pampanga’s 3rd District: Four women, one seat?

Beauty, brains, and political might could converge in a potential congressional race for Pampanga’s third district. While this scenario is speculative, based on current indicators and political signals, it presents a dynamic competition featuring four highly accomplished women, each with distinct political pedigrees and professional backgrounds. I will introduce them in alphabetical order:

Mica Gonzales, daughter of incumbent congressman and senior deputy soeaker Dong Gonzales, could enter the fray with the formidable backing of her family’s political legacy. Her experience as an incumbent provincial board member might provide her with a solid grasp of local governance and strategic acumen, making her a strong contender in this scenario.

Nicolette Henson, whose father Rosve Henson is a former provincial board member in the 3rd district and now serves as assistant secretary of the Department of Human Settlements & Urban Development, could merge regional influence with a sophisticated understanding of national politics. In addition to her role as a board director at Clark Development Corporation, she is also a media practitioner with PTV-4, the Philippines state-controlled media. This dual expertise in corporate governance and media might enhance her public profile and influence.

Sonia Soto, currently involved with the Multi-Sectoral Governance Council and the Foundation for Responsible Citizenship, could add significant complexity to the race. With a history of working closely with former Mayor and Congressman Oca Rodriguez, Soto brings extensive experience to the table. As the President and General Manager of CLTV36, and with a strong activist background advocating for student and women’s rights, she combines media savvy with a deep commitment to social issues. Her blend of intelligence, charisma, and hands-on approach to public service may well make her a compelling candidate for voters seeking genuine change.

Finally, Dr. Hazel Tumang, a practicing medical professional and daughter of Mexico Mayor Ted Tumang, might bring both intellectual rigor and a deep commitment to public service. Her candidacy could represent a fusion of her family’s enduring political influence and her personal dedication to improving health and well-being. Her compassionate approach and sharp mind position her as a formidable candidate. The Court of Appeals’ recent affirmation of the dismissal and disqualification of Mayor Tumang, pending his motion for reconsideration, adds another layer of uncertainty to this high-stakes race.

As the May 12, 2025 midterm elections approach, we will soon know more once the certificate of candidacy filings start in October. This race, though a scenario at this point, could become a true battle of beauty and brains, with each candidate’s combination of intelligence, charm, and strategic vision being crucial in winning over the electorate.
