PCOO launches ‘Gender-Fair Media Guidebook’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO- Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) in cooperation with the Philippine Information Office (PIA) and the Provincial Information Office (PIO) of Pampanga recently launched anew the ‘Gender-Fair Media Guidebook at the Benigno Aquino Hall, here.

At least 200 participants and representatives from various national and local agencies, media outfit groups, colleges and universities joined the event.

In behalf of Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda, Pampanga Provincial Administrator Atty. Andres S. Pangilinan Jr. welcomed everyone who took time to join the re-launching of the gender-fair media guidebook adding that the event is an opportunity to broaden our understanding on gender-sensitivity on the usage of languages pertaining to women.

“Congratulations for coming up with this idea of launching a book about gender equality. We could all learn from this on how to properly address and communicate with anyone,” Pangilinan added.

Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary for Operations and Legislative Affairs Atty. Marie B. Rafael seconded that the guidebook aims to cease gender-discrimination and to promote gender-equality.

The book includes practical guides on the role of media in gender development, stereotyping in advertising media, use of non-sexist language and articles to fully understand “sex and gender.”

Likewise in a brief speech, PCOO Director Vinci Beltran encouraged the crowd to advocate a gender-sensitive culture.

“Media is a powerful tool that can shape our culture. This time we want to promote a gender-sensitive culture with the use of the media guidebook. We aim that anything we see on various different media outlet like the television, radio and even on the newspaper be fair,” Beltran added.

The Gender-Fair Media Guidebook was first launched in 2017.
