Ph seals $5.58B F-16 deal with US

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is set to acquire 20 F-16 fighter jets from the United States in a deal worth $5.58 billion, marking a major boost to its military modernization efforts.

Strengthening Defense Capabilities

National Security Council spokesperson Jonathan Malaya emphasized that the procurement is part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) push to modernize its air capabilities. “This is not directed at any particular country, but rather to strengthen our territorial defense,” Malaya said.

South China Sea Tensions

The deal comes as tensions continue to rise in the South China Sea, where Chinese vessels have repeatedly encroached on Philippine waters. The U.S. Department of Defense noted that the addition of F-16s would enhance the Philippines’ ability to patrol its maritime territory and improve interoperability with U.S. forces.

US Reaffirms Commitment

During a recent visit to Manila, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to its Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines, pledging to support Manila against potential threats. “Our alliance is ironclad,” Hegseth said.

China’s Reaction

China has historically opposed U.S. arms sales in the region. While Beijing has not issued an official statement on the F-16 deal, similar sales to Taiwan have previously drawn strong criticism, with China accusing the U.S. of destabilizing the region.

What’s Next?

With this purchase, the Philippine Air Force is expected to significantly boost its air defense capabilities. The first batch of F-16s is set for delivery by 2028, signaling a major shift in the country’s defense strategy amid ongoing regional challenges.
