SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ – The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) conducted a specialized training for Rice Business Innovations System (RiceBIS) implementers and regional agricultural staff.

This is a component of PhilRice’s RiceBIS program, a flagship initiative aimed at empowering rice-based cooperatives by improving systems, enhancing products, and strengthening market connections.

RiceBIS 2.0 Program Lead Diadem Gonzales-Esmero said the capacity building activity is part of a broader effort to improve the effectiveness of RiceBIS, which emphasizes clustering rice farmers into self-sustaining agribusiness communities.

“This training ensures our implementers are better informed and prepared to support our RiceBIS Farmers’ Cooperatives/Associations,” Esmero added.

The initiative aims to strengthen cooperatives in order to improve farmers’ incomes, enhance production systems, and promote inclusive growth in the rice sector.

Meanwhile, CDA Undersecretary Alexander Raquepo noted that their agency continues to collaborate with the Department of Agriculture and PhilRice to ensure the effective operation of cooperatives across the country, thereby contributing to inclusive and sustainable rural development.

CDA Assistant Secretary Virgilio Lazaga, who leads the agri-cooperatives cluster, expressed full support for the ongoing programs of RiceBIS aimed at promoting the growth and development of cooperatives.

Participants received training in essential areas, including cooperative principles, legal registration requirements, and leadership responsibilities.

Practical case studies were utilized to simulate real-world situations.

Additionally, sessions on financial literacy, conflict resolution, and strategic planning equipped attendees to make informed and long-term decisions for the development of their cooperatives. (CLJD/CNG, PIA 3-Nueva Ecija)
