SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ – The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is offering leadership training for the youth.
The Be RICEponsible Leadership Camp is a program intended for the 10-15 year old and 16-18 year old age brackets.
PhilRice science research specialist Lorelie Vee Domingo said the training aims to nurture the next generation of leaders, develop an awareness of the relevance of rice science, and become RICEponsible—mindful of farmers.
“Here, campers experience actual farm activities such as rice planting, machine demonstrations, rice art sessions, and discussions on rice science appreciation and leadership principles,” Domingo added.
Each batch of the leadership camp consists of 20 participants.
Recently, 20 student-leaders from the Science City of Muñoz were part of the Be RICEponsible Leadership Camp held at RICEsParK, located inside the PhilRice compound.
Jo Manglicmot, one of the students who participated, described RICEsParK as her favorite place to learn.
According to her, she not only learned to be RICEponsible but also learned how to be an effective leader.
“I understood better the hardships of our farmers and I also learned how important the culture of agriculture is to Filipinos,” Prince Aj Avila of Linglingay Elementary School stated.
Aside from the lessons of being a responsible leader, the participants also learned farm machine operation, the Minus-One-Element Technique, and the making of rice mosaic art. (CLJD/CCN, PIA-3 Nueva Ecija)
