A top official in Central Luzon has confirmed that House Speaker Martin Romualdez is set to be replaced before President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s next State of the Nation Address (SONA). According to a highly placed source who requested anonymity, discussions within the President’s inner circle are already underway to ensure a “graceful exit” for Romualdez in the next Congress.
“Malaki kasi ang dagok sa Pangulo ang nangyayari sa Quadcom committee hearing, kasama pa ang kontrobersyal na 2025 national budget na may blank items,” the source said, referring to the House panel probing intelligence and confidential funds.
The same source warned Marcos about Romualdez’s growing political baggage, hinting at historical parallels. “Tandaan ninyo, ang nakasira sa Marcos ay Romualdez. Baka maulit na naman ang nangyari noong EDSA Revolution,” the source added.
Tensions have escalated as the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association recently condemned alleged corruption involving financial aid programs. While Romualdez has not responded to the issue, he was seen attending a city fiesta mass in Mabalacat, Pampanga, on February 2, alongside his family , Mabalacat Mayor Cris Garbo and Deputy Speaker Dong Gonzales.
Rumors of a shake-up in the House leadership have gained traction amid controversies surrounding the 2025 budget and increasing dissatisfaction within political and military circles. If Romualdez steps down, it would mark a major shift in Marcos’ legislative strategy and could reshape the power dynamics in the administration.
