Siargao tourists cram into overcrowded Sayak airport

Hundreds of departing visitors in Siargao, the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines,” were packed inside the small Sayak Airport (IAO), likened to sardines in a can due to the limited space and lack of proper facilities.

Located in Barangay Sayak, Del Carmen, Sayak Airport serves as the island’s main gateway, but its outdated infrastructure struggles to accommodate the surge of tourists. The construction of a new, more spacious terminal was halted in 2021, leaving travelers frustrated with long lines and cramped waiting areas.

With the appointment of DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, it remains unclear what steps will be taken to resume the airport’s expansion and address the growing demand for improved provincial air travel.

Sayak Airport is classified by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) as a Class 2 principal (minor domestic) airport, yet its current state fails to meet the needs of Siargao’s booming tourism industry.

Frequent travelers and local stakeholders are now urging authorities to prioritize the airport’s expansion, ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience for both tourists and locals.
