STATEMENT OF UNITY FOR THE ANGELITES’ PROTEST

We, the student councils, publications, organizations together with the Angelite community, resolutely unite our voices to demand the Holy Angel University for a TRANSPARENT BREAKDOWN OF FEES, REFUND OR REMOVE UNNECESSARY LABORATORY FEES and ALLOW THE USAGE OF PROMISSORY NOTES.

Ten months since the government-imposed lockdown, the neoliberal attacks on education continue to worsen. Regardless of the online mode of learning, students and parents alike are faced with dubious laboratory fees ranging from 2,000 PHP to 20,000 PHP.

However, Angelites have been vocal about these fees remaining unused as students resort to using their own resources.

To add, the quality of these virtual laboratories is still in question as they require high gadget specifications which may found to be inaccessible to many. Student leaders who had their own inquiries and appeals regarding the issues on laboratory fees have been subjected to the university’s unnecessary bureaucracy, with the administration evading each question from one office to another.

Until now, the university administration is yet to clarify the discrepancies that are tied with these expenses.

The usage of promissory notes is most necessary in these critical times and yet the university administration has chosen to prioritize profit over the students’ right to education.

We recognize the leniency and efforts that Holy Angel University has exhibited with the student’s academic needs but the fight for accessible and quality education carries on.

With 4,156 petition signatories, we ask the Holy Angel University to fulfill their mantra of student-centeredness and compassion, for one student to be left behind is already a sign of failure.

In the spirit of unity and the right to education, we collectively call on the Holy Angel University administration to HEED our demands!

The Angelite community deserves concrete actions that are in line with the sentiments of the student body, it is time for the band-aid solutions to be taken off.

The global health crisis should not hinder the university from upholding the right to accessible, inclusive, and quality education. In fact, these cruel times should urge the education sector to firmly hold on to their values and mantra of No Student Left Behind.
