MANILA, Philippines – The Boeing E-4B Nightwatch, commonly known as the “Doomsday Plane,” was recently seen in the Philippines as part of U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s visit.
While it appears to be a modified Boeing 747, the E-4B is a heavily fortified airborne command center designed to keep the U.S. government operational in a nuclear war or other catastrophic scenarios.
Built to withstand nuclear blasts and electromagnetic pulses (EMP) that could disable electronic systems, the aircraft carries advanced communication equipment, including satellite links and a very low frequency (VLF) antenna capable of reaching submerged submarines. A distinct radome on top of the plane houses many of these communication tools.
The E-4B can also refuel midair, allowing it to stay airborne for up to a week—ensuring continuity of government operations in a crisis.
Spotting this rare aircraft in the Philippines marked a significant moment, highlighting its role in high-level U.S. military and government missions.
