Garbo’s trust rating plunges amid controversies, lifestyle scrutiny

MABALACAT CITY — Mayor Crisostomo “Cris” Garbo’s trust rating has dropped to a low 11% in a recent public opinion survey, as allegations of corruption, governance failures, and criticisms over his lavish lifestyle continue to erode public confidence.

The study, conducted by selected political science students in Pampanga from April 10 to 20, involved 300 respondents aged 18 to 60. It revealed a sharp contrast between Garbo and his political rivals, with mayoral aspirant Geld Aquino earning 81% positive trust and vice mayoral bet Jun Castro leading with 86%. Win-win Garbo, the mayor’s ally, managed just 13%.

Respondents cited poor healthcare services, the dilapidated public market, lack of infrastructure, and poor handling of illegal drugs, COVID-19 response, and waste management as key issues. The P610-million land purchase and P2.7-billion government center project — both funded by loans — were also seen as sources of public mistrust.

Adding to the public’s dismay is Garbo’s perceived extravagant lifestyle. Survey participants noted his collection of luxury shoes, watches, high-end cars, Ducati motorcycles, and frequent visits to exclusive golf courses.

“Wala po siyang legacy sa loob ng 8 years niya panunungkulan,” said Veronica Dizon, a respondent from Barangay Dau, reflecting the sentiment of many in the study.

Garbo is also facing a disqualification case before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) over his alleged violation of the three-term limit rule.
