BALANGA CITY – Residents of Barangay Talisay in Balanga City, Bataan can now look forward to safer days ahead as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a 125-lineal-meter flood control structure along the Talisay River, aiming to protect the community from seasonal flooding.
DPWH Bataan 2nd OIC-District Engineer Roland Rainier Victorino said the P39.2-million project, funded under the 2024 national budget, is expected to significantly reduce the risk of river overflow during typhoons and heavy rains.
“During typhoon seasons, heavy rains often cause severe flooding in residential areas near the Talisay River. With the completion of this flood mitigation structure, we can now assure residents that their properties and livelihoods are better protected from the impacts of extreme weather,” he emphasized.
The new infrastructure features embankments and retaining walls to contain floodwaters, along with spillways and flow systems that regulate water levels. A newly installed drainage system runs along the river to help prevent overflow, offering comprehensive protection to low-lying areas.
In addition to the flood control features, the project introduced a community-centered space—Disiplina Park. The small park includes basic amenities intended to encourage residents to gather, interact, and engage in community activities.
“We also incorporated Disiplina Park—a small community space with basic amenities designed to encourage public use and promote community engagement,” Victorino added.
By combining critical infrastructure with a community-friendly design, the DPWH continues to demonstrate its commitment to resilience, safety, and sustainable development in the province. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Bataan)
