Pampanga eyes passage of updated tax ordinance

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — The provincial board eyes the passage of a tax ordinance that will update the basis for tax collection.

The proposed ordinance, which will be signed this October and implemented next year, will cover the general revision of property assessments and classification in the province.

Provincial Administrator Charlie Chua said it is high time to update the 23-year old local tax code and streamline the Schedule of Market Values (SMVs) in various municipalities.

“We can collect even more real property taxes (RPT) if the tax ordinance is updated and the revisions are implemented. More RPT collection would mean more basic services and more development programs for the people of Pampanga,” Chua said.

Under the law, local government units are required to revise SMVs and conduct general revision of property assessments and classifications every three years.

However, data from the Department of Finance show that Pampanga’s property taxes are still based on a 1994 SMV. –Marie Joy S. Carbungco
