ANGELES CITY — An intoxicated police officer detailed at the Nueva Ecija Provincial Police Office run amok killing his mother and wounding his nephew inside their residence at Sitio Pader, Barangay Pulung Maragul here late Monday afternoon.
Police Major Dante Cabungcal, deputy chief of Talavera police station, and resident of Angeles City, voluntarily surrendered to his superiors when cornered in his residence past 4 p.m., said Police Colonel Joy Patrick Sangalang, officer-in-charge of the Angeles City Police Office (ACPO).
According to Cabungcal’s neighbors who declined to be named, they heard heated altercation and shouting match moments before series of gunfire.
Responding cops found a lifeless woman sprawled on the ground identified as Purita Cabungcal. Injured is Miquito, suspect’s nephew, who was rushed to Ospital Ning Angeles for treatment.
Cabungcal, who was on break after his official duty for the Southeast Asia Games (SEAG), held himself hostage and locked inside the room.
Sangalang said two handguns both caliber .9mm pistol were found inside the room of Cabungcal. He said one was government-issued while the other is owned personally by the police officer.
Metal fragments and spent cases of 9mm caliber were recovered at the crime scene but police are still investigating which firearm was used.
Cabungcal was placed under the custody of ACPO while investigation is ongoing. Homicide and serious physical injury charges are being readied against the police officer.
