Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa, father of alleged drug lord Kerwin Espinosa, was shot dead by a still unidentified suspect inside the Baybay City Provincial Jail early Saturday morning, reports said.
Mayor Espinosa was killed by a still unknown assailant inside his cell at the Baybay City Provincial Jail early Saturday morning.
According to Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Director Elmer Beltejar, details behind Espinosa’s death are still sketchy.
Espinosa, he confirmed, had been earlier arrested for drug-related charges. He was supposed to have been served a warrant by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) prior to the incident.
Beltejar was quoted to have said that the serving of the warrant application was “purely CIDG” and “had no coordination with PNP Region 8.”
Also supposed to have been served a warrant along with Espinosa was a certain Raul Yap for charges related to Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.
The elder Espinosa surrendered to the police in August after his name popped up in the list of government officials allegedly involved in illegal drugs.
He told the authorities he knew of some other 30 lawmakers and police higher-ups involved in illegal drugs.
After leaving police custody, he was nabbed in October for illegal drug and weapons charges.
His son Kerwin, who was arrested in Abu Dhabi last month, is now in the custody of the Abu Dhabi police.
