ANGELES CITY – The city government on December 8, 2020 achieved another milestone as it successfully held a special event amid the pandemic – the first ever Tribute to the Queens of Mutya Ning Angeles (MNA).
The web event, which was streamed live via the City Information Facebook page, was a brainchild of Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr.’s Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel.
Mayor Lazatin said the event was a symbol of “the city’s resiliency – a reminder which proves that no calamity, disaster or pandemic can stop Angeleños.”
The pageant was created in 1992 after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, and is now celebrating its 28th year. Its first coronation night was held at the Holy Angel University (HAU), with Crisanta Delfin as the first title holder.
“On its 28th year, this one-of-a-kind tribute to previous Mutya queens holds an even deeper and special meaning for all of us. Amid the uncertainties this year holds, the (MNA) serves as a reminder, that even in the darkest of hours, we can still find beauty and inspiration around us,” Mayor Lazatin said.
Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting formally opened the event where she emphasized the contribution of women in society.
Vega-Cabigting highlighted “women empowerment,” as she reminisced those days where women were not given proper recognition.
According to her, “beauty pageants have become an essential platform where women can speak up and have their voices heard on important societal issues.”
She said, “beauty queens are seen as inspirations – especially for young girls who aspire to become something more, when they grow up.”
Lazatin’s Chief Adviser and Tactician Director IC Calaguas cited the efforts of the MNA Working Committee led by Manuel, Angeles City Tourism Officer-in-Charge Anneleen Antonio-Sugui and Consultant Cecille Flores-Sanchez, the over-all event director.
The event was a combination of pre-recorded and live, and showed the history of the MNA as told by event organizers and handlers; the journey of previous queens and their current lives now; and the making of MNA.
Some of the MNA queens present during the tribute are Sharon Abaya Reyes, MNA 1994; Gizell Cabrieto Vinoya, 1996; Lara Isabelle Dizon, 2010; Mary Ann Felker, 2018; and Mizziah Reyes, 2019.
Meanwhile, Antonio-Sugui, for her part, extended gratitude to all the sponsors of the event, especially its co-producer – Beautederm Corp., headed by President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rei Anicoche Tan.
