At least seven motorists have reportedly died and several others were severely injured in a 11-car pile-up at the southbound lane of the Lubao Bridge in Barangay Sta. Cruz, on Friday morning, December 2.
One of the fatalities was identified as 16-yr-old student Micaela Jimenez. Most of the injured were taken to the St. Joseph Hospital of Remedios in Lubao town.
SPO1 Avelino Agumboy said the vehicles were awaiting the green light at an intersection in Lubao town when the wayward mixer truck plowed into them.
A tricycle carrying Jimenez was pinned down and reduced to a heap of metal when it was crushed by the construction mixer.
The green mixer truck allegedly lost its brakes and plowed into several vehicles some of which were overturned along the Olongapo-Gapan Road.
The names of the other fatalities were not immediately identified.
The accident along the road leading to the City of San Fernando created a monstrous traffic jam.
The driver of the construction mixer truck was identified as 29-yr-old Cesar Sabanate, who reportedly tried to run away from the scene but had been caught by responding policemen. Sabanate said he lost control of the truck.
SPO1 Agumboy said the mixer truck was cruising at high speed from Guagua town before it figured in the accident.
Lubao Mayor Mylyn P. Cayabyab had already ordered the installation of hazard lights, traffic barriers, steel posts and new road signages along the Olongapo-Gapan Road in the past in a bid to prevent road accidents.
