Festival of killings: Arayat village chief shot dead

Arayat, Pampanga — Barangay Lacquios chief Norberto “Mel” Lumbang was shot dead inside barangay hall in Arayat town on Sunday night, August 11. He was 57.

According to Pampanga Police Regional Office – 3, four suspects in a black Toyota Innova with plate number NAU-2713 arrived outside the barangay hall. Three of which emerged from the vehicle where one wielded a long firearm and opened fire on Lumbang shooting him multiple times causing his death.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 pm and was reported to authorities 30 minutes later, the police report stated.


“The Police Regional Office – 3 has initiated a comprehensive investigation, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice for Lumbang,” police brigadier Benjamin Sembrano, PRO-3 officer-in-charge.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of chairman Lumbang during this difficult time. Rest assured, we will deploy all available resources and work tirelessly until those responsible are brought to justice. the safety and security of our communities remain our highest priority,” he added.
Lumbang was serving his first term.


A source, who requested his anonymity, told iOrbit News, that Lumbang has called a meeting with fellow barangay captains in Arayat and expressed his intention to run for mayor following the sudden death of vice mayor Bon Alejandrino.


Lumbang is the remaining armed leader in Arayat, the source added.


The motive of the shooting remains unclear as police continue to investigate.


The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting. They remain unidentified as of this writing. A flash alarm was issued and dragnet operation is also underway.


In the City of San Fernando, three village chiefs have been killed since 2022. Barangay San Pedro Chairman Mat Ryan dela Cruz and his driver were shot dead at a gas station last June. Barangay Alasas Chairman Alvin Mendoza and Barangay Sto. Rosario Chairman Jesus Liang were killed in April and December 2022, respectively.


Lumbang is a reportedly leader of the Rebolusyonaryong Gerilya ng Arayat (RGA) breakaway group of the New People’s Army (NPA).
