Shaping tomorrow’s journalists in Pampanga

Assumpta Tech HS: Shaping Tomorrow’s Journalists: In an age where truth is often obscured by misinformation, campus journalism stands as a beacon of hope.

This vision was brought to life by the Central Luzon Media Association (CLMA) Pampanga Chapter through its Campus Journalism Workshop Caravan on November 26 at Assumpta Technical High School in Sta. Monica, San Simon, Pampanga.

The workshop was a testament to CLMA’s enduring commitment to community-centered journalism. Since its founding in 1978, CLMA has pioneered grassroots initiatives guided by the principle of sharing knowledge freely, as articulated by Chairman Emeritus Sir Caesar “Bong” Lacson.

This inspiring event was made possible through the visionary leadership of Sr. Josefina Maria Magat, School Director Arlene Carlos, and Student Affairs Coordinator Orlando De Leon Jr. It attracted the most lively, talented, and engaged audience I have ever encountered—students from elementary, secondary, and senior high school levels.

Assumpta Technical High School, established in 1970, continues its mission of service and self-reliance by providing practical education tailored to the needs of underprivileged families. The school offers programs in farming, carpentry, electronics, sewing, and small business management, equipping students with life-changing skills to forge brighter futures.

This setting proved the perfect venue for the workshop, which aimed to inspire and train aspiring journalists in the craft of storytelling, a skill as empowering as the technical trades taught at Assumpta.

The workshop featured diverse modules designed to equip participants with essential skills:

  • Editorial, News, and Feature WritingLed by Chairman Emeritus Sir Caesar Bong Lacson, students learned the art of crafting compelling and insightful stories.
  • Creative Photojournalism
Master Nelson Gonzales and talented Gerald Gloton taught participants how to capture stories through a lens, balancing creativity and smart storytelling techniques.
  • Engaging TV Broadcasting
CLTV 36 icon Jhen “Atching Malagu” Lumbang-Parungao, along with the dynamic mother-daughter team Gracie Rutao and Luisse Gabriel Rutao, offered tips on impactful broadcasting and audience engagement.
  • Innovative Layout and Desktop Publishing
Boy wonder Jaypee Manalang shared his expertise in collaborative publishing and modern layout design.

Adding depth to the sessions, seasoned evaluators Master Nelson Gonzales and Jaypee Manalang provided personalized feedback, giving participants rare insights into competitive journalism.

In today’s world, plagued by misinformation and “fake news,” young journalists bear the immense responsibility of defending truth and promoting integrity. The workshop emphasized that journalism is not just about reporting—it is about upholding justice and being a voice for the voiceless.

Programs like this are crucial for shaping the moral compass of future journalists. As they learned technical skills, participants were reminded of their role in combating misinformation and building trust in their communities.

As these aspiring journalists complete the workshop, they walk away with more than technical skills; they carry the torch of truth, fueled by a commitment to integrity and justice.

This workshop is a powerful reminder that every storyteller has a role in shaping society. Let us celebrate and support young voices as they fight for truth and strive to build a brighter, more truthful tomorrow.
