This holiday season, the colorful lanterns of Pampanga are not just lighting up the streets of the province and the country but have shine brightly across the world.
Crafted meticulously by Kapampangan lantern makers, they carry with them a century-old tradition that has transcended time and borders. They bring a piece of Kapampangan heritage to the world.
Over the West Coast in Los Angeles, California, a 16-foot giant lantern, created by Kapampangan lantern maker Arvin Quiwa, was officially lit on December 21 at Seafood City.
In Italy, these lanterns have taken on a new life with lubenas. These special lanterns, sent as a gift from the local government of Magalang to the Filipino community in Milan, are being showcased in various churches across northern Italy, including the Basilica di Sto. Stefano Maggiore and the Duomo di Milano.
These lanterns don’t just brighten our homes and streets during the holiday season, they illuminate the world with tradition. They bring Filipinos together, no matter how far apart families may be, spreading happiness and smiles to everyone and creating a shared experience that has transcended both time and place.
As the vibrant lights of Pampanga’s lanterns continue to glow in different corners of the globe, they serve as a reminder that Christmas is more than just about festive decor and holiday cheer. It is a celebration of a diverse culture, tradition, and heritage of the world, a time to pause and reflect on the true value of the season while remembering the birth of Jesus Christ.
