Former Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. is under investigation for alleged ties to a massive ₱6.7 billion drug haul, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Speaking to DZRH, Remulla revealed that Azurin, who recently retired, was allegedly aware of the buy-bust operation involving dismissed Police Master Sergeant Rodolfo Mayo Jr., a former member of the PNP Drug Enforcement Group.
“It appears Gen. Azurin knew the details beforehand,” Remulla said. “He even instructed, ‘If you release him, catch him again.’”
Although Azurin is no longer subject to administrative charges, criminal charges could be filed if evidence links him to the operation.
The PNP denied allegations of a “grand conspiracy” but pledged full cooperation. Authorities have issued arrest orders for 30 officers, including two generals, for offenses ranging from evidence tampering to planting evidence.
Currently, 22 active police officers are in restrictive custody. A task force has been formed to track down the remaining suspects. The Department of Justice is preparing to file non-bailable charges for conspiracy and other crimes.
This explosive scandal underscores systemic issues within the PNP, raising serious questions about its internal operations and accountability.
