In a compelling keynote address at the Central Luzon Media Association (CLMA) Induction and Oath Taking Ceremony of Pampanga and Regional Officers, Pamcham Chairman Rene G. Romero emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in community development. The event, held at the Prism Lounge of Widus Clark Hotel on Thursday, January 23, featured Romero as the Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker, as well as an awardee in the field of business.
Romero, renowned for his impactful contributions to the business sector, spoke about the evolving relationship between media and business, stating that collaboration is crucial for building trust and showcasing local success stories. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including businessman and philanthropist Rodolfo “Tatay Bong” Pineda, who was honored as the Newsmaker of the Year and recognized for his philanthropic efforts. Additional dignitaries included Pampanga Vice Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda, First District Pampanga Congressman Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II, who received an award for Legislative Governance, Mayoral Aspirant Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab, Board Member Fritzie David-Dizon, congressional aspirant Dr. Hazel Tumang, Clark Development Corporation President Atty. Agnes Devanadera, awarded for Corporate Governance, Mabalacat City Vice Mayor Atty. Gerald Aquino, Angeles City Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting, and Porac Acting Mayor Myla Clarete, alongside aspiring Mayor Mike Tapang.
During his speech, Romero addressed the historical hesitations that business leaders had regarding media engagement. “In the past, many businessmen were cautious about engaging with the media due to concerns about potential misrepresentation,” he noted. He acknowledged a shift in this perspective, highlighting that businesses are increasingly viewing media as a crucial partner in promoting accurate information and fostering economic growth.
Romero also pointed to the success of various local businesses, particularly in the restaurant and retail sectors, which have benefitted from media coverage. “The media serves as a powerful platform to inform, inspire, and unify communities, and its contributions surpass even what organizations like the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (PamCham) can achieve.”
He called for enhanced collaboration, urging attendees to deepen and expand their partnerships, stating, “As we look ahead, I encourage this partnership to deepen and expand, ensuring that businesses and media continue to work hand in hand to create an informed, engaged, and thriving community.”
Looking towards the economic landscape of 2025, Romero outlined promising developments linked to key infrastructure projects like the North-South Commuter Railway and the expansion of Clark International Airport. He expressed optimism about Pampanga’s potential to emerge as a metropolitan hub, spurred by these initiatives and ongoing private investments.
Tourism was another focal point of Romero’s address, sharing that Clark recorded 1.2 million tourist arrivals in 2024, solidifying its status as a premier destination. He advocated for strategic urban planning to maintain growth, emphasizing Pampanga’s opportunity to develop without facing the congestion challenges experienced in Metro Manila.
In addressing the socio-political landscape, Romero acknowledged current challenges but reaffirmed Pampanga’s resilience. “It is undeniable that the socio-political landscape, both nationally and locally, is rife with challenges. Political infighting among high-ranking officials, as well as within local governments, creates uncertainty and instability. Despite these national concerns, Pampanga stands as a beacon of resilience and progress. We are fortunate to benefit from efficient governance and a business-friendly atmosphere, fostering confidence and optimism among local stakeholders. This stability allows us to prioritize sustainable growth and development, undistracted by political commotion.”
As the ceremony concluded, Romero urged attendees to take collective responsibility for community development, emphasizing the importance of active engagement in shaping a prosperous future.
“If you don’t involve yourself in the development of your community, then you don’t have the right to complain when things go wrong,” he stated.
