Cardinal David honored with UA Medal of Merit

In a momentous recognition of his service to the Church and society, His Eminence Pablo Virgilio S. Cardinal David, Bishop of Kalookan, was conferred the prestigious “Lumen Humanitatis” Medal of Honor by the University of the Assumption (UA) in San Fernando, Pampanga. The award, the highest distinction given by the institution, recognizes individuals who serve as a “light for humanity” through their Christ-like example, inspiring hope and fostering unity.

The conferment ceremony, led by San Fernando Archbishop Most Rev. Florentino Lavarias, was attended by prominent members of the clergy, including Archbishop Emeritus Paciano Aniceto, Cubao Bishop Emeritus Honesto Ongtioco, and Tarlac Bishop Roberto Mallari. The event was marked by a solemn Eucharistic celebration, underscoring the profound spiritual significance of the occasion. Cardinal David is only the third recipient of this prestigious award, following former President Corazon C. Aquino and Archbishop Aniceto.

UA President Rev. Fr. Oliver Yalung and Vice President for Administration Rev. Fr. Nicomedes Nicdao praised Cardinal David for embodying the university’s vision of “Biasa, Mayap, Maganaka”—wisdom, goodness, and compassion. Known for his scholarship, pastoral leadership, and advocacy for the marginalized, the cardinal has long been regarded as a voice for justice and a pillar of faith in the Philippine Church.

Local government leaders, including San Fernando Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag and Vice Mayor BJ Lagman, joined the academic and religious communities in celebrating the cardinal’s achievements. They expressed their gratitude for his unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of the faithful, particularly in his home province of Pampanga.

Born in Betis, Guagua, in 1959, Cardinal David, affectionately known as “Apung Ambo,” has dedicated his life to defending human dignity and fostering unity in the Church and society. His recognition with the “Lumen Humanitatis” Medal of Honor reaffirms his enduring legacy as a beacon of hope and a steadfast shepherd of the people.
