BCDA, KEPHILCO to develop Smart City energy management system

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the KEPCO Philippines Corporation (KEPHILCO) for the conduct of a feasibility study on the development of a Smart City energy management system in New Clark City.

Signatories of the MOU were BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer Vivencio Dizon and KEPHILCO President and Chief Executive Officer Jae Han Go. The signing was witnessed by KEPHILCO General Manager Choi San Jae and BCDA Corporate Planning Officer Raul Buensalida.

The MOU intends to create a non-binding framework for BCDA and KEPHILCO to discuss and explore on collaborative opportunities for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the said system.

Through the Smart City energy management system, BCDA envisions to optimize the use of basic utilities such as power, in making the New Clark City truly smart and modern with fast interconnection and stable and reliable power supply. This complements high-impact infrastructure projects in Clark, including railways to ease traffic and provide interconnectivity in the whole city.

In the agreement, the conduct of a feasibility study will determine the viability of a Smart City energy management system in New Clark City.

KEPHILCO, an affiliate of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), is mandated to enter into and engage in the business of developing and
operating power generation facilities, as well as utilizing the Smart grid or Microgrid technology in New Clark City.

In 2016, KEPCO has been named the best company in the electric utility sector in the world and was ranked first in the top 100 Asian power company by Forbes Global 2000—Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of top public companies in the world.

KEPCO has projects in 24 countries including Japan, China, USA, and the Middle East.

South Korea’s expertise in smart city development which prioritizes a low carbon and green growth society makes it a great example for BCDA’s development projects in Clark.

With BCDA’s dream of establishing sustainable growth in New Clark City, this 9,450-hectare development project will feature mixed-use real estate developments for housing, a business continuity center that would also house national government agencies, an agro-industrial park that will provide a platform for research and development, and the Philippine Sports City.

New Clark City will maximize public space as only a third of the total land area will be developed and two-thirds will be allotted for green spaces.

Even the roads in the New Clark City will be the first of their kind in the Philippines. The roads will have wide pedestrian lanes, exclusive bicycle lanes, lush greenery and an integrated mass transit lane.
