The City Government of San Fernando headed by Mayor Edwin ‘EdSa’ Santiago through its City Agriculture and Veterinary Office launched this year’s Inter-Barangay Gulayan sa Kababaihan Contest through a seminar on crop production and protection on March 12 at Tierra Linda Building. The activity is in line with the celebration of Women’s Month 2018.

Women’s group in different barangays of the City of San Fernando will be competing in developing backyard garden to be planted with various vegetable crops that aims to lessen malnutrition among the children.

In her opening remarks, Local Council of Women Chairperson Dr. Leticia Yap said the activity seeks to encourage every Fernandina to plant organically-grown vegetables towards good health and good nutrition.

During the seminar, CAVO Agricultural Extension Worker Donalene Megino discussed the proper ways of backyard planting, guidelines and criteria of the said competition.

In his speech, Mayor Edwin ‘EdSa’ Santiago stressed the importance of having a community garden. By this, everyone may have access in getting nutritious food since farming is the key to ensure food security for the community.

He also lauded the Fernandinas for engaging themselves in different agricultural programs of the city.

Also present during the program were City Councilor and Committee on Agriculture Nelson Lingat, City Agriculture and Veterinary Officer Cristina Sangumay and GAD Focal Person Amalia Catacutan.
